Kaseys Poetry

Created by Hannah one year ago

Kasey was a talented writer. She shared her words online and touched the hearts of people from all different part of the world. She won prizes for her poetry and spoke on the radio too! Here is one of my favourite poems of hers.

That Poem is Perfect

There’s not a line in that poem that feels incomplete

Like finishing a puzzle where not a single piece
Has been brushed under the sofa or
Stolen by the fucking cat.

That poem is perfect
Not a comma is out of place
I’d pray there’d be a spelling mistake
But, damn, every couplet rhymes
And every line ends exactly when it’s supposed to.

It gives me a headache.

Because that poem is perfect
But it’s all wrong.

And my poem’s trying to squint
In the mirror
To look past the uneven line breaks,
The half rhymes,
That time she wrote
Segway instead of segue.

Sometimes she wishes she was blind
So when she feeds herself to the mirror
She can’t receive the brokenness
That it spits back

My poem can’t see the millions of
Devastated oysters the author
Ripped open to find the
Perfect combination
Of the perfect words.

I’m learning to say thank you
Instead of sorry
I’m learning to say no
Instead of um-well-I don’t-uh-okay

I’m learning that the definition
Of perfect is so, so different
From the one I had been told
In fact, that poem is far from perfect
Because that poem
Lifted her chin
And screamed
The world deserves perfect
Anything less is not good enough

Some people have a microphone
Stitched to the inside of their cheek
But when enough of us care
Our tiny voices
Hold the hand of a young poem
Keep his gaze as perfect slips away
It’s okay
Shh, it’s okay
